A note from Andrew:
I never imagined Gezelligheid would become such a tradition. It all began in a crowded bar in Amsterdam on a frigid night in February when a woman squeezed in next to me and said “oh gezellig!” The closest translation of that word would be cozy, or the pursuit of those things which get us through the darkness. We’ve taken the concerts to both coasts, in churches and synagogues, but it always comes back home to Chicago. There are a few constants: the 4th Presbyterian church on Michigan Ave, Ian Schneller’s horn sculptures, and lights by Ryan Murphy, but the music changes from year to year and is best summed up as whatever feels right. An new ongoing project of mine called Echolocations is an extension of gezelligheid where I “play to the room” whether it be a canyon in Utah or a 18th century aqueduct in Lisbon. Anyway, this is a special thing that stands apart from making records and touring. I look forward to it every year.

Exclusive Premiere of Echolocations: Canyon on NOWNESS

“Acting on a tip from a musician friend who had said this place had extraordinary acoustics, Tyler and I went there on a lark. We hiked for 6 hours (because we went the wrong way) and scaled a 200 ft cliff. We were not disappointed.”

NOWNESS has the exclusive premiere of Andrew’s experimental journey into the canyons of Utah, first in the five part ‘Echolocation’ series directed by Tyler Manson.

Echolocations: Canyon

Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum comes to the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston for a 3 month exhibition spanning February 4 – May 10 2015. The installation of 36 speakers will feature a brand new ambient composition by Andrew called Echolocations: Canyon.

Recorded in the Coyote Gulch canyons of Utah, Echolocations: Canyon is first in a series of short films and recordings by Andrew that will document site specific compositions in exceptional national and urban environments.  Bird says:

“Ever since I was a child I would test different spaces with my voice or whistle or violin. Whatever sound you make it’s like a giant limb that can reach beyond your fingers and grope the corners of the room.  Now when I’m on tour playing a different theater every night we “tune” the room hunting down the bass traps and the standing waves to give the listener the most even and wide spectrum sound. There are certain frequencies that resonate while others are lifeless. Sometimes the room refuses to yield and I have to consider playing different songs that will work in that room. It’s a challenge but I enjoy the moments when I must yield to the environment. So I thought it would be interesting to take all this outside where the reflections off the landscape are triggering countless inferences and steering the conversation.”
